Exploring the Beauty of GR-114 Stage 22: From Puerto Peña to Casas de Don Pedro

Nestled in the heart of Spain’s stunning landscapes, the GR-114 trail offers adventurers and nature lovers alike a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the country’s breathtaking natural beauty. Stage 22 of this trail, stretching from Puerto Peña to Casas de Don Pedro, is a testament to the allure of Spain’s rural and natural heritage. Spanning a distance of 17.5 km, this segment promises an unforgettable journey through the scenic Canal de las Dehesas route.

Departure from Puerto Peña

The journey begins at the recreational area of Puerto Peña, where the blend of artificial beaches along the García de Sola reservoir’s banks, a small dock for boats, picnic areas, and a beach bar sets the perfect stage for an adventure. As travelers move eastward, they continue on the same road that leads to the Puerto Peña beach, eventually reaching the dam. This path offers magnificent views of both the reservoir and the downstream flow of the Guadiana River, enhancing as one approaches the Orellana reservoir.

The impressive bridge of the N-430 and the dam’s surroundings, including the steep, almost vertical rock faces at the end of the Sierra de Puerto Peña, mark the beginning of this stage with awe-inspiring engineering feats and natural beauty.

The Path Along the Canal de las Dehesas

After crossing the dam, a brief interruption occurs due to the road BA-7113, but the trail soon resumes, now following the service road of the Canal de las Dehesas. This asphalted and well-maintained path runs along the left bank of the canal, offering constant views of the Guadiana Valley. The initial part of the canal traverses a primarily forested landscape, with dense shrub formations dominated by rockrose (Cistus sp.) and holm oak (Quercus ilex).

Bird-watching enthusiasts will appreciate the small observatories installed along the riverbank areas, where pastures and holm oak dehesas provide a picturesque setting. The trail and canal gradually approach the Guadiana River, leading to areas where the river becomes more visible and dominates the landscape.

Encounters with Nature and Engineering

Throughout Stage 22, several footbridges over the canal allow access to its opposite bank, serving as gateways to surrounding livestock farms. The trail also passes by two sets of sluice gates, a reminder of the canal’s historical utility, now lying dormant.

As the trail nears its end, the expansive view of the Orellana reservoir and the bridge leading to Puebla de Alcocer comes into sight. The elevated position of the canal above the Guadiana River offers unobstructed views, especially as the path winds through pastures with minimal tree cover in its final kilometers.

Arrival at Casas de Don Pedro

The stage concludes at the intersection with the BA-137 road, near the town of Casas de Don Pedro, marking the end of Stage 22 and the beginning of Stage 23 for those continuing on the GR-114 trail. The parish church of Casas de Don Pedro serves as a notable landmark at this journey’s end.

It’s important to note that Stage 22 traverses through the ZEC (Special Conservation Area) and ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) “Embalse de Orellana y Sierra de Pela,” highlighting the trail’s significance in conserving the region’s natural and avian biodiversity.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone looking to explore the wonders of Spain’s natural landscapes, the GR-114 Stage 22 offers an enriching experience that combines natural beauty, historical engineering, and a deep respect for the environment.
